This is about few thoughts i had about my gear switch, played a little bit around and came up with a short demo.
Target is to replace the gear switch of my car with my own, or at least get the gear info, so that my TCU can read the gear switch info and change accordingly.

This demo based on a few buttons & resistors, arduino nano, and a 20/04 display.

The buttons, from top to bottom:
park (blue), reverse (red), neutral (blue), drive (green),
4th (white), 3rd (white), 2nd/1st (white), 1st (black).
